Gone are the days where children gather outside households to play with marbles or chase after one another. In the modernized world, you’re more likely to see a young child watching YouTube videos or playing games on smartphones/tablets! How do we get our children interested in going back to the good old times of human interaction, or at least get them off electronic devices for some time?
Yes, there may be educational videos available on YouTube – but do you REALLY want your child to be glued to a screen 24/7? That was the problem that I faced when I was preparing for my internship. My parents believe in “smart babysitters”, leaving Gordon with a smartphone to “babysit” him while they watch TV/do other things. I understand that there may be emergency situations where it’s inevitable, but it’s not an excuse to do it all the time! To limit the time Gordon spends on watching videos/TV, I started looking for board books that my parents can use to bond with him – that’s where I got to know about Littlebookdot.
Littlebookdot started back in 2014, selling books in Qoo10. Cindy took over the business from her best friend in 2016 because she saw a huge potential in a store specializing in Chinese books for children aged 0 to 15 years old. Since then, Littlebookdot is now in various platforms like Shopee and Lazada. In October this year, they also started accepting orders on their own website.
To strengthen bonding time and improve the motor skills of our tiny todds, Littlebookdot included interactive products like their Stickers, Arts and Crafts, Lift-the-Flap series and many more. For parents who want to train your children to be fluent in Chinese, there are educational books and story series recommended by schools!
LEARNING CHINESE CAN BE FUN
My parents have limited education, but my father is fluent in English while my mother in Chinese. I’ve been blessed to inherit good language capability from both parents, so language has been a strong skill of mine. We also have basic ability of Bahasa, does that make us multilingual?
I do have English board books, but it was SO HARD to look for Chinese ones! At the tender age of 14 months, my baby Hulk does not handle paper pages well :( I went on an all-out search for Chinese board books, and Littlebookdot came to my rescue.
SESAME BEGINNINGS SERIES
Littlebookdot gave me a full set of their Sesame Beginnings Series, which is from the popular TV series – Sesame Street. The series consists of 9 board books with simplified Chinese that highlights topics of everyday situations like making mistakes, having a sleep buddy and using the toilet for our tiny todds.
I love how the series has characters that parents and children can relate to! I’ve personally loved Sesame Street when I was young, and I still love it now – Gordon loves Elmo but I love Cookie Monster. The series does not have any hanyupinyin (汉语拼音), but there are a few words that may be unfamiliar to those who are not strong in Chinese. No worries, we always have Google translate to help ;)
Gordon’s favourite book is《我爱洗澡》, which translates to I love bath time. The series is recommended for 0 to 3 years old, but he’s still too young to be reading storybooks for now but it’s fun to see him flipping the pages and getting excited at all the characters! Would recommend it if you are generally good at Chinese, or if your little one loves Sesame Street :)
NOTE: The Sesame Beginnings Series is so popular that they're out of stock! However, you can let Cindy know if you're interested and she'd notify you when stocks are available again.
HOLEY FANTASTIC SERIES
Cindy highly recommended this series to the young ones, because they get really fascinated with the holes in the book! The holey fantastic series features holes on each page of the book, and kids just LOVE to poke their fingers through the hole while their parents are reading it.
This is recommended for 1 to 6 year old, so it’s definitely one of the must-have books! The books also features hanyupinyin (汉语拼音), which is great for parents who need a little help in Chinese – it would also help your little one learn more about hanyupinyin (汉语拼音) as he/she grows older.
